The Future of Aviator Training Requires Live Blended Synthetic Training Environments

As today’s battlespace continues to expand, military aviators need to stay digitally connected to data from the ground to the air to achieve their mission. Yet, before these warfighters enter the aircraft, they require the training needed to help them operate new weapon systems. Using real assets alone is costly and difficult to achieve, which is why the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and Marine Corps are turning to blended synthetic training environments to address warfighter mission training needs. Live blended and synthetic training ensures our warfighters are ready to fight and win the battles they may face in the 21st century.

“The volume of  airspace that we have in our current fixed test and training ranges is insufficient for training on the weapons and sensors that we have developed today,” according to Chip Gilkison, Director of Live Blended Test & Training Solutions at Rockwell Collins. Additionally, there are sensors and weapons systems that are classified that shouldn’t be turned on for training, Gilkison adds. It opens up opportunities for our enemies to watch our CONOPS development.

In this short video, Gilkison shares the importance of Joint Secure Air combat training System (JSAS), which blends the training environment together, securely connecting air and ground elements, with a  multi-layered security approach that allows 4th generation aircraft to connect with 5th generation aircraft, and enables pilots to train as they fight.
